How is it to live with my family in Bujumbura?
Bujumbura is in every sense an African city but basic goods and services expatriates need and want are available--acceptable and safe housing for rent, international schools, restaurants, gyms, international churches, just not a lot of variety of each and the price and quality vary! Bujumbura is on Lake Tanganyika and is served by an international airport. It is not at all like East African mega-cities Nairobi, Kampala, Addis, Dar. It's similar to Kigali or Lilongwe, but slightly smaller with fewer housing options and more basic shopping.
Does one really have to learn French?
Almost all of the faculty are Burundian. Some classes are taught in English and some in French, but most students are much better in French than English--though as part of the East African community this is changing rapidly. Many peer Burundian faculty do not speak English. It is still helpful to learn French to be most effective as a teacher and as a peer, particularly in medicine.
Do professors really need a master’s or doctorate?
Hope Africa University is fully accredited by the Government of Burundi and is a member of the Inter-University Council of East Africa. To keep its accreditation, faculty must have advanced degrees. The primary exception is faculty teaching English. Native English speakers possessing a BA and a certificate to teach English as a foreign language may serve on the faculty.
Who pays for the missionary faculty?
The university has no funds to pay foreign faculty. The Friends of HAU charity supports capital infrastructure but not missionaries. Tuition is modest and HAU has trouble supporting its Burundian faculty at Burundian lifestyle levels. Therefore all expatriate faculty must raise their salaries and expenses through a personal network of donors-- churches and personal contacts contributing to a mission agency. SERGE is the agency for two teams of American faculty working at HAU.
Can one serve directly under the university or come independently? Is this a short term or sabbatical opportunity?
They university has accepted self-supporting (volunteer), short-term English speaking university faculty academically vetted and approved through Friends of Hope Africa University.
See SERGE is seeking those willing to make a longer commitment.
Who are “Friends of Hope Africa University”?
Friends of HAU is an American 501c3 (non-profit) corporation that collects and dispenses money for the benefit of HAU. Friends of HAU has been instrumental in the construction of the university buildings, the Van Norman Clinic and the renovation/expansion of Kibuye Hope Hospital See
What is the church or doctrinal position of the University?
Hope Africa University is affiliated with the Free Methodist Church, though it is non-denominational in its admissions and hiring policies. Currently, there are more than 50 churches or religions represented in the student body and faculty.
