Medical and Dental Education at HAU
Medical education at the Frank Ogden Medical School is a 6 year process leading to an MD degree. The first three years are basic preparation with major transition to clinical education in the 4th year. Clinical education takes place at the Van Norman Clinic next to HAU and at Kibuye Hope Hospital located in a more rural area of Burundi. Medical education has involved many visiting expatriate faculty. Only 400 of the 5700 HAU students are in medicine. The first dental students entered in 2011.
Follow this link to a 5 minute video on clinical medical education at HAU:
The first medical class graduated in December 2012. The 2014 entering class is nearly 100 students!
Much of the education of the first two medical school classes was done by volunteer short-term American faculty. However the full time faculty is growing with Burundians (several following graduation), Congolese and 7 full time and 2 part-time American physicians. Adding surgical, dental and pharmacy faculty is a high priority. Here are the specialists in Bujumbura without Dr. Bond
Kibuye Hope Hospital
Kibuye Hope Hospital was a "one-doctor" mission hospital located in a rural part of central Burundi. It is now making the transition to major teaching hospital of HAU. The Friends of HAU (a 501(c)3 charity) is investing heavily in upgrading this basic facility and providing housing for staff and students. A team from Engineering Ministries International has produced a 15-20 year development plan for the hospital. Initial projects are underway.
Team McCropder See
serves at Kibuye Hope Hospital. It is the other SERGE Burundi team. It is comprised of 6 physicians, two teachers and 8 children who arrived in January 2014 to join the Burundian and Congolese faculty working there--and many of medical students. The team is to be joined by another teacher (2014) and an engineer and family (2015).
Clinique Van Norman
The Van Norman Clinic was opened in late 2012. Smaller than Kibuye Hope Hospital but equipped for emergencies, surgeries, obstetrics, inpatient stays for adults and pediatrics, it is to be a primary teaching and service facility for HAU in Bujumbura. It is located across the street from HAU.
